I’ve walked on the bottom of a temporarily emptied lake…:-)

have you ever walked on the bottom of a temporarily emptied lake?!... 🙂

Bassin(lake) of Saint-Ferréol is situated at the foot of the Black Mountain, 45′-drive from Toulouse, and 5km-away from the fortified town of Revel. It was designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet, the architect of the Canal du Midi, in order to be its main water reservoir and its 67 hectares spread over 3 counties: Haute-Garonne, Tarn and Aude. Every decade, the lake is completely emptied during several months to be cleaned up, to check the servo-mechanisms of the small dam and its pipelines. Before the end of October, about 10 tons of fish were “moved out” to nearby lakes, waiting for theirs to be filled up next spring… 🙂

here’s the lake last July: 🙂

  3. What a fascinating experience, it must be quite a task relocating that vast amount of fish.

  5. How very interesting… not many people can say they’ve done that! 🙂

  6. What a massive undertaking.

  7. I imagine it must have felt strange! Looks like the lake is not tremendously deep – when they erected the dam, did they have to move anyone out of the potential lake area?

  8. Very interesting post Melanie, and quite fascinating that this is possible.

  9. I have just been reading about Bassin de Saint-Ferréol online, it is an incredible piece of civil engineering. It would be a big job in modern times, but completing it such a long time ago is a terrific achievement.

  10. That’s a good sign that the fish like the waters in the reservoir.

  12. Incroyable! Never heard of this being done to a lake before.

  13. Amazing! What well-travelled fish for lake dwellers. The lake looks like a desert emptied… quite an incredible feat!

    • exactly, Osyth… it reminded me of the “Racetrack playa” in Death Valley National Park, California – but no sliding rocks @ Saint-Ferréol… 🙂

  14. Never! Interesting to imagine what they find when they empty it.
